A Live Art & Participatory Programme
1B Window Gallery, Coppermill Lane, Walthamstow, London E17 7HA
29 July – 2 August 2026

WHAT IS THIS?

Future Imaginaries is a five-day live art and participatory programme hosted at 1B Window Gallery, a small but mighty high-street creative space in the heart of Walthamstow. Each day the space will be activated with a participatory work that invites passers-by and local communities to think, feel, and respond to a single question:

“What does our collective future look like?”

Future Imaginaries opens the floor to the voices, visions, and methods of invited collaborators. The exhibition window and street a vessel for collective imagination.

THE SPACE

1B is an 85 sq ft window gallery on Coppermill Lane, one minute from St James Street Overground. Its large windows make the entire interior visible from the street, 24 hours a day. The pavement in front is the stage that engages the public whether or not anyone steps inside, this is key curatorial accessibility.

THE PROGRAMME: FIVE DAYS, FIVE ACTIVATIONS

Each day of the programme will be range of activities. Activations may take any participatory form: a conversation, a performance, a talk, a making session, a sound piece, a written exchange, or something not yet named. Anyone who wants to contribute are welcome to:

Create work that invites participation from people both who intend and those did not plan to attend.

Explore futures: collective, personal, imagined, or feared.

Always free and accessible to all.

Self-contained, independent and able to deliver it within the day.

We are happy to include artists and organisations whose practice is rooted in community, care, identity, ecology, memory, or social imagination. We welcome any social intervention in live art, participatory theatre, social art, community music, spoken word, creative health, and adjacent fields.

WHAT WE ARE OFFERING?

We offer the shared use of the space, curatorial framing, and public visibility. This is a self-funded voluntary project, we will credit anyone who wants to contribute and build a shared record of the work. If you wanted to join us you would have use of the 1B Window Gallery, specifically we are activating the outdoor space in front of the gallery, within the programme period (30 July to 2 August). We will promote through ALAS social media, newsletters, and community networks, plus document the activities.
